Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard was born in New York in 1907. Along with his brilliant friends and colleagues George Nelson and Charles & Ray Eames, he ranks undoubtedly among the leading exponents of post-war design. The talented and ingenious artist gave rise to vibrant and cheerful pieces, such as the famed Wooden Dolls, the Ceramic Container collection, the impactful Graphic Pillows and rugs designed for Vitra.

In 2016/17, the Vitra Design Museum organized the exhibition "Alexander Girard: A Designer's Universe".

After completing his studies in architecture, his creativity permeated the field of furniture, interior and graphic design. But Girard’s true vocation was textile design: his colourful rugs and fabrics, with their bright, geometric and abstract patterns, were appreciated by the Herman Miller Company and by Vitra. After his death in 1993, his heirs donated the Girard archive to the Vitra Design Museum.
