"The first act of architecture is to put a stone on the ground. That act transforms a condition of nature into a condition of culture; it’s a holy act."
Mario Botta started practising the art of building design as a child: at the age of only sixteen, he designed his first single-family home, which was later built in the Canton of Ticino. He graduated from the IUAV in Venice and in 1970 he opened his own studio in Lugano, which he later moved to his home town. His architecture was heavily influenced by great masters such as Le Corbusier, Louis I. Kahn and Carlo Scarpa, whom he met in Venice during his studies. His talent has led him to win international prizes and awards.
