What are the functions of artificial light in outdoor spaces? Illuminate, of course, but not only. Creating paths, defining spaces, supporting an atmosphere. In brief, outline the right scenography to encourage us to live gardens, terraces and courtyards even when the sun goes down. And as outdoor spaces are increasingly assimilated to real living rooms, light sources also adapt: in what way? If before the outdoor lights were conceived as essential and almost always hidden lighting sources, now the scenario changes. Outdoor lamps are very often adapted versions of interior design classics with their own personality and decorative matrix. Or they are projects developed especially for the outside, but no longer intended to hide but to be seen, with discretion and elegance but also with character. Whether it's a small balcony or a large garden, each space needs to be illuminated to be experienced even from sunset onwards, in those silent and suspended hours, perhaps the most beautiful, which is really a shame to give up. But in order not to spoil this charm, it is essential to resort to the right light, suitable both from a technical point of view and from an aesthetic and above all quality point of view, since the external environment is subject to atmospheric agents that put a strain on every furniture and accessory. So let's see the latest proposals from Flos , a company to focus on for refined and iconic lamps.

Heco ย byย  Nendo

Heco by Nendo for Flos

Designed precisely for the exterior, Heco is essential but contains more than one meaning. The structure is in iron and somehow recalls the classic wrought iron garden furniture and accessories. The light source is made up of a sphere, like a small personal moon that is brought to the earth from the night sky and held by the structure itself. Heco can be configured in various ways: it can be a lamp or a small table and as a lamp it can be placed against the wall in various orientation variations. Cover image and below.

Caule ย byย  Patricia Urquiola

Caule by Patricia Urquiola for Flos

Patricia Urquiola is inspired by the botanical structure of the flowers for this series of linear and poetic garden lamps. Caule is available in various configurations: floor, wall, grid or smooth shell. It is a modern and characterful lamp that nevertheless integrates discreetly into the outdoor context thanks to its shapes, never in contrast with the vegetation, on the contrary, in gentle dialogue.

The outdoor versions of Captain Flint ย and IC ย byย  Michael Anastassiades

In addition to the projects designed specifically for the outdoors that we have just talked about, Flos has decided to bring outside two of its most iconic and elegant lamps. These are Captain Flint and IC: the first, in the outdoor version has a travertine or lava stone base, perfect for integrating into the natural environment, the stem and head are available in four finishes. The identity of the lamp remains, and when taken outside takes on an even more interesting and unusual character. And the same can be said for the outdoor version of the IC: a touch of intense elegance that makes an outdoor context truly special and scenographic. The opal sphere resting on the steel structure continues to characterize the young but already iconic creation of Anastassiades, now available in new color variations: red burgundy and black lava.
