The Memphis movement celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2021, and the name Memphis Milano remains synonymous with a revolutionary design approach that contradicted the minimalism of the time. Founded by Ettore Sottsass in 1981 along with visionary designers and architects, Memphis presented an alternative abstract creative expression with furniture, lamps and accessories such as the Carlton Bookshelf with bold colours, playful shapes and freedom of form inspired by Pop Art and 50s kitsch.
Thanks to its liberating spirit, Memphis has always been a source of inspiration for young designers.

Since 1996 the company has been run by Alberto Bianchi Albrici and includes two other brands Meta-Memphis and Post Design. The 80s collections are still produced under the Memphis Milano name, following the exact specification and processes to preserve the brand’s value. The movement’s influence, freedom of expression and radically liberal approach can still be seen today in the contemporary worlds of fashion, graphics and interior design, a testament to its important role in the history of design.
