Charles & Ray Eames
Charles and Ray Eames were a design couple whose personal and professional collaboration lead to the creation of some of the 20th century’s most recognised furniture and accessories. From the Eames Lounge chair to La Chaise, the iconic Hang It All coat hooks and Eames House Bird for Vitra, the couple’s visionary approach, which combined their separate creative skills, truly revolutionised home interiors embracing new materials and technologies and delivering functional yet highly adventurous pieces.
The duo’s unpretentious products reflected a respect for tradition and desire to bring design to the masses.

“What works good is better than what looks good, because what works good lasts.” Ray Eames
Charles Eames and Bernice Alexandra Kaiser (Ray) met at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, married in 1941, and subsequently opened the Eames Office, the hub of their design world for over four decades. Through a continual cycle of trial and error they developed a process for molding plywood which culminated in the creation of the famous Lounge Chair Wood, and today their vast legacy of products, found in design museums around the world, are still faithfully produced by Herman Millar, Inc. and Vitra.
