Ettore Sottsass

Ettore Sottsass Jr was born in Innsbruck in 1917. Acknowledged as a revolutionary of the late 20th century, Sottsass’s creations across a broad design spectrum, including architecture, interiors, home and office accessories and furniture continue to remain highly influential and relevant today. During his extensive career, Sottsass was Art Director for the brand Poltronova, at which time he created the iconic Ultrafragola mirror/lamp, a bold radical rejection of 70s modernism.

In 1980 he co-founded the Memphis Group, an Italian design collective, whose kitsch, colourful creations challenged the accepted standards of the time. His subsequent work with Olivetti lead to the award-winning typewriter Valentine, and other important pieces include the Shiva vase for Barcelona Design and the Mandarin Chair for Knoll. Celebrating 100 years of Alessi the brand is re-releasing an original 1989 Sottsass collection Twergi in new colour combinations, a testament to the continued influence of Sottsass on today’s designs.
