Gerrit T. Rietveld
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld was a Dutch architect and designer born in 1888. His work was heavily influenced by the Art Movement ‘De Stijl’ of which he became a member in 1918. The movement advocated abstraction and simplicity of form and colour and these principles can be seen in many of Rietveld’s most famous furniture works such as the iconic Red and Blue Chair, Zig Zag chair, Utrecht armchair and Schröder 1 side table, all produced by the Italian furniture brand Cassina.

Intensifying experiences through design, engaging our senses.
As an architect, Rietveld was the designer behind several important buildings. In 1924 in collaboration with the owner, he constructed the Rietveld Schröder House, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Later works demonstrated a more functional approach reflecting his interest in the style Nieuwe Zakelijkheid or Nieuwe Bouwen. In 1955 he began the design of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam which was subsequently completed after his death in 1964.
