Born in Milan in 1891 Gio Ponti graduated in architecture and from 1923 became a designer for the Richard Ginori ceramics company, a position which earned him the Grand Prix award in 1925. Following the opening of his own studio he also began to produce his own furniture work including the iconic modernist 699 Superleggera chair and the Distex armchair both for Cassina.
