Sustainable architectures, signed by famous designers, which leave a distinctive mark on the landscape or blend with it. Interior dedicated to art and design. And vineyards that act as open air theaters. These are the new generation wineries: designer places, recently built or based on ancient foundations, which by combining tradition and innovation, technology and nature, involve the visitor in a journey not only enological but also historical and architectural. From Trentino Alto Adige to Sicily, here are the addresses not to be missed for tailor-made visits and tastings among the barriques.

Kellerei Bozen - Cantina Bolzano, Bolzano

Born from the union of the cellars of Gries and Santa Maddalena, in South Tyrol, the Kellerei Bozen - Cantina Bolzano is built in compliance with the Casa Clima Wine energy efficiency and sustainability standards. Attention is drawn to the main building: a glowing cube that seems to come to life from the surrounding hill.

Astemia Pentita, Barolo (Cuneo)

Astemia Pentita

Astemia Pentita in Barolo

Outside, resting on the Cannubi hill, two large superimposed volumes that evoke two enormous wine cases. Inside, unusual and ironic furnishings such as those of Gufram and large murals by local artists that create the illusion of being really inside a wine case in the visitor. It is the Astemia Pentita: a winery with a pop and surrealist soul founded in Barolo by the entrepreneur Sandra Vezza. A project in which color and originality are combined with natural materials linked to wine production.

Antinori in Chianti Classico

Antinori winery

"It is a sacred place of silence, a temple of ancient grape rites, but it is at the same time a place of production that must meet certain quality requirements". This is how the architect Marco Casamonti explains the project of the Antinori winery in Chianti Classico. Conceived to have a low environmental impact and high energy savings, it has a structure that is almost invisible from the outside. Iconic is the spectacular spiral staircase that connects the three floors of the structure.

Tenuta Castelbuono in Bevagna (Perugia)

"For the first time in my life I had the thrill of being able to walk, talk and drink inside one of my works". And entering the Carapace, in fact, is not just entering a cellar: it is entering a work of art. This is explained by Arnaldo Pomodoro: the artist who created the cellar-sculpture of the Castelbuono di Bevagna estate, near Perugia. There, where Montefalco Sagrantino is born, to welcome those who arrive there is a dome covered with copper engraved with cracks that recall the furrows of the earth. "The landscape reminded me of the Montefeltro where I was born as Piero della Francesca told it in his paintings," said Pomodoro. "I had the idea of a shape that evokes the turtle, a symbol of stability and longevity, which with its carapace represents the union between earth and sky".

Feudo di Mezzo, Passopisciaro (Catania)

Feudo di Mezzo

Feudo di Mezzo Etna

On the north side of Etna, between lava flows and woods, there is the Feudi di Mezzo winery: a building that, although built in 2012, has its roots over five centuries ago. Conceived as a real stone garden, it was in fact created inside a lava flow of 1566. Nearby, in the middle of a vineyard at an altitude of over 800 meters, ancient houses restored to welcome guests and a theater in the vineyard used for cultural productions.
