We continue the review of MOHD dedicated to design icons with an incursion in the lighting category, due in the year of Euroluce, at the Salone del Mobile in Milan to be held from 9 to 14 April. In the panorama of Italian and international design, there is perhaps the most iconic lamp of Atollo, designed in 1977 by Vico Magistretti and produced by  OLuce  , winner of the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 and present, from the same year, in the collection of Moma di New York, as well as other prestigious museum institutions in the world.

A matter of shapes ...

A cylinder, a cone and a hemisphere: this is how Vico Magistretti, in 1977 interpreted, revolutionizing, the classic design of the abat-jour, crystallizing it in a new lamp, sculptural, elegant and versatile. Because of its geometry it represents well the style and the taste of the years in which it was designed, and yet even today, it does not appear dated.

... And of balance

We can say that Atollo, while talking about the '70s, has become a new archetypal table lamp, from which many other contemporary lamps were born. Yet the amazement aroused by that hemisphere, which seems to magically stand on top of the cone, is difficult to imitate.

The attention to details

Vico Magistretti, who at the time was the leading designer and art director of OLuce, had imagined the lower part as a supporting column of the upper dome, therefore large enough to give stability to the whole. Originally there were two versions: one in lacquered aluminum and the other in opal glass. The goal was to create a soft and diffused light, a light that furnishes and creates a special atmosphere wherever it is.

Versatility

In the living room, in the work space, in the bedroom or in an entrance hall: it is surprising how this lamp adapts to all the rooms of the house, thanks also to the variations available. Atollo is presented today in three different sizes and in different finishes: gold, white or black metal and opal glass.
