The Italian-Swedish designer Luca Nichetto is only fourty, but from the amount of his creations, 400 in a 15-year career, he seems to have behind an as long history as glass. It is no coincidence that we mention this valuable and versatile material: as a matter of fact, Nichetto was born in Murano, Venice, in 1976, and by that time his family was already at the second generation of glass artists. His grandfather was a master glassmaker, his mother a decorator. This background led him to study first at the Institute of Art in Venice, then to graduate in industrial design. A year later, in 1999, he started working with the glassmaker Salviati, and in 2003 he began collaborating with Foscarini. The first lamp Nichetto designed for the Italian lighting company is called O-Space, but one of the most famous ones takes its name from Family Guy: Stewie. It is an unusual floor lamp that's large and covered with a soft and light fabric, capable of emitting an oblique light which makes it a perfect focal point in any environment.

In 2006 Nichetto opened his own studio in Venice, but five years later he moved in his second country of origine, Sweden, where he now lives and works, albeit often travelling. His international collaborations in the fields of industrial design, interior design and even architecture are countless, but what makes Nichetto stand out is the ability to join two poles and two cultures: Italian irony and romance and Scandinavian understatement. What seems an apparently impossible task, is yet successfully achieved.

The Cloud collection for & Tradition is only one exmple: “My idea was to combine the Italian and Danish traditions of making sofas. Cloud has the defined shape of the Danish design tradition and the soft and cosy pillows of the Italian heritage.”

A few, simple ingredients resulting in a comfortable and elegant piece of furniture that's perfectly suited for contemporary living spaces, as it provides maximum comfort within relatively compact dimensions. The exclusive Kvadrat Sunniva fabric does the rest:

The famous Motek chair for Cassina stands out for the innovative production technique based on pressure molding, with which a sheet of felt is folded to create a rigid body necessary for the chair to support weight, without losing the original lightness and beauty of the material.motek-cassina-nichetto

The same combination of simplicity and sophistication characterises another creation for Cassina, the Torei 381 series of tables. The brilliant idea is in the raised edge that turns the table top into a tray. And in modularity: the elements of the collection can be combined or rather intertwined:

If you like rounded lines of the fifties and sixties, do not miss the Swell ceramic collection designed for Petite Friture: the name refers to American surfers' slang, and indicates the perfect wave. Don't you hear the Beach Boys in the background?

Let's stay in America with an accessory that is already a cult: Inception by Seletti, a reproduction of Manhattan inspired the eponymous film by Christopher Nolan and made of silicon: Perfect as a dish drainer or organizer, in the kitchen as in office, useful for attracting attention:

Let's move to Tokyo for the Toshi collection by Casamania, which includes cabinets carved with geometric patterns inspired by Japanese mosaics, as the name suggests to those who speak Japanese (it means "City").

Last but not least, here is a chair that , by looking carefully, you can also see partially framed in the picture above: Nuance, always designed for Casamania, a true hymn to craftsmanship with its colorful shades obtained by manual labor upholstery sewing up together a variety of tissue pieces.
