"The world needs more and more authenticity. We once used to think that what is useful is beautiful, now we know that what is beautiful is useful." Vico Magistretti

In 1977, when Italy was set on fire by students' and workers' demonstrations, the Milanese architect Vico Magistretti designed a bookcase for Cassina that soon went on to become an international best seller - Nuvola Rossa (Red Cloud in Italian).

Nuvola_Rossa_Cassina_laccata_neroConceived in natural beechwood, an essence characterised by reddish shades, but also available in a white or black lacquered finish and in canaletto walnut, it stands out for its folding, self-standing and incredibly light frame. Its secret lies in the absence of proper, "ordinary", vertical sides thanks to a design that plays with diagonal bracing to create support for the shelves, thus eliminating the side pieces. As a consequence, Nuvola Rossa seems to be a peculiar combination of two bent ladders and six shelves - the central four of which the central four are removable and the latest stackable. Nuvola_Rossa_Cassina_dettaglio

"I like concept design, what is so clear that you could not even draw it. I communicated a lot of my projects over the phone," said Magistretti, known for its ability to maintain a recognizable language, rigorous and essential, in an activity that spanned both residential complexes and everyday objects.

Apart from the unique functionalist simplicity, Nuvola Rossa is characterised by its refined finishes, signed by Cassina. Both these qualities allow this project to be timeless and beyond fashion. This bookcase will last you forever.
