279 Beugel is an historic chair designed by architect Gerrit T. Rietveld in 1927 and industrially produced for the first time by Cassina. Three simple elements assembled together for an ergonomic chair with a timeless design.
Gerrit T. Rietveld, the exponent of the neoplastic movement, is especially known for his icons such as the Zig Zag chair and the Red and Blue armchair, made of wood by Cassina's joinery since 1972. The 279 chair is a chair made up of two identical tubular steel structures on the sides to support the painted plywood seat and, to give more strength, laminated wood. With a 18mm diameter tubular, Beugel was one of the first chairs with a thin metal structure among the known models of the time; the tubular models Le Corbusier, Jeanneret and Perriand measured in fact about 25mm while that of the chairs of Mart Stam 20mm. Today, Cassina presents Beugel with a diameter of 15mm to make the chair even lighter.
