Vitra Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman

"Why don't we make an updated version of the old English club chair?" This was the initial spark of inspiration for Charles Eames when he embarked on designing the Lounge Chair and Ottoman. The goal was to craft a generously proportioned armchair that seamlessly merged comfort with premium materials. In 1956, Charles and Ray Eames revolutionized armchair production by establishing new standards. Their creation surpassed traditional club chairs, not only in terms of being lighter but also in sophistication and comfort.

Over time, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman has evolved into an icon of modern design. Beyond being a mere armchair, it has become emblematic of American culture, perfectly embodying the optimism of the 1950s.

This extraordinary style icon flawlessly blends design, supreme comfort, high-quality materials, and state-of-the-art craftsmanship. Thanks to its emotional resonance and unmistakable presence, coupled with its meticulous attention to detail, the Eames Lounge Chair has the power to transform any space into a scene reminiscent of a contemporary film set adorned with artworks and unique masterpieces. In recent years, Vitra teamed up with the Eames Office to introduce a larger version of the chair (with a more generous seat and backrest) catering to taller individuals who seek the same unparalleled comfort envisioned by Charles and Ray Eames in their original 1956 design.

The seat and backrest of the chair are expertly crafted from curved plywood, showcasing various visible veneers. The classic version is available in American cherry, Santos rosewood, or black-pigmented walnut. There is also a white variant made from white pigmented walnut, and a black ash version with a black lacquer finish. The cushion upholstery can be removed if desired. The armrests are affixed to the seat and back shell using shock-absorbing joints (rubber and metal fittings) and they are luxuriously upholstered in leather. The seat stands at a height of 38 cm (25 cm when bearing weight, as per EN 1335-1:2000 standards). The base comes in two options: a five-spoke base for the chair and a four-spoke non-swivel base for the Ottoman. Both base and backrest supports are made of die-cast aluminum. To ensure stability and protect various floor surfaces, the glides are equipped with either rigid carpet pads or felt inserts for hard floors.

The ottoman will have the same finish as the chosen chair configuration.

In the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, the grain on the wooden shells of the two elements will be matched during the production process. This is not possible if purchased separately.
