Does opting for an extendable table mean giving up good design? No, not anymore. Today the scenario is totally different from the past, because the companies in the sector have been able to combine style and functionality. Solving a crucial question: giving the technology of table extension a nice look, or better, making the mechanism that allows it to extend, almost invisible. So if before the choice was between a beautiful table and an extendable table, today it is no longer the case, because very often the standard model corresponds to the extendable one, practically identical but with this additional functionality. The theme becomes particularly interesting in the festive days when we approach the parties and we start planning dinners at home with many guests. Because at Christmas, but also New Year’s Eve, we imagine a large table set well where our guests can find a comfortable place. That's why we have selected 5 emblazoned projects: 5 tables famous for their design that also feature a precious extendable version.

1.  Filigree  by Rodolfo Dordoni for  Molteni & C.

Essential but with a strong style, the Filigree table is characterized by the curve that is created in the encounter between the legs and the top. The curved one, made with die-cast aluminum, defines its profile and characterizes the design, together with the really thin top. The telescopic and lateral extension mechanism is in fact enclosed in a thickness of only 38 millimeters and is therefore completely unexpected but perfectly functional. The finishes contribute to make it unique, some examples? Pewter, chrome and aluminum for the base, marble, glass and various types of wood for the top.

2. Long Island by  Rimadesio

Long island by Rimadesio

Long Island will appeal to those who prefer clean and essential lines too. In the extendable version, this table has a two-step extension mechanism: this means that in addition to the starting length, there are two other possibilities. The finishes make it even more interesting: among the options, the combination of bronze structure and top in opaque glass and bronze structure and top in shiny glass stand out.

3.  Big Table by Alain Gilles for  Bonaldo

Big Table by Bonaldo

When Alain Gilles designed this table ten years ago, his intent was to create a dynamic decor, whose perception changed according to the perspective. And he succeeded, with the theatrical stroke of the structure, composed not by the four classic juxtaposed legs, but by the central weaving of several elements with different colors in the original version. Gilles says that to work on the 3D model of the table he had given different colors to the various legs only to distinguish them in the design phase. But then he decided to keep this feature even in the final model.

4. Eliot by Giorgio Cattelan for  Cattelan Italia

Eliot by Cattelan Italia

Eliot also plays with the basic idea for a table and the result is two legs whose shape resembles half of an inverted cone. Extremely graceful, they give the whole a dynamic and very elegant appearance. The extensions are visible at the two ends of the table, but even when closed, they contribute to making its design harmonious.

5.  Air by Daniele Lago for  Lago

Air by Lago

We conclude with a truly unsuspected extensible table: it is the Air model by Lago, which seems suspended and yet rests on the two iconic crystal “legs”. Well, also Air has its extendable version that allows you to add up to 4 more seats. The top and the two side extensions can be in the same material to give an idea of continuity, or in different materials to create a particular accent.
