Serge Mouille’s story tells about a passion, a love for art, nature and science, arisen in early ages and cultivated during an entire life. Son of a policeman and a seamstress, he is just thirteen when is admitted at the Applied Arts School, where he gives proof of an innate talent, exerted during the long hours spent at the botanical garden, drawing any different creature.

The years of study soon make him an appreciated artisan, master in the art of metal and silver processing. At the age of 25, he became a teacher in the same school where he studied, and in 1945 opened its first laboratory.

Decisive is the encounter with Jack Adnet, director of the Company of the French Arts, and its request to create some big lamps for a customer from South America. Thus, come to life the Formes Noir, the collection that made the designer famous.

Instantly recognizable for the slender structure and the ovoid body, are inspired to the world of nature and insects, personifying the “organic” design popular in the mid 20° century. The iconic Three-arm and Tripode lamps are among these.

Simple and essential in the shape, these lamps represent a reaction to the 50’s trend, exalting the excess, and become the symbol of an ancient handcraft expertise, transmitted generation by generation.

Even nowadays, after the passing of its founder, the Serge Mouille company makes use of the original projects, and every object is entirely realized by hand, following the traditional techniques.
