"We consider Taccia the Mercedes Benz of lighting design, a symbol of success": This is how the Italian architect and designer Achille Castiglioni  spoke of Taccia in the 70s, the lamp he designed together with his brother Piergiacomo, just like the equally famous Arc, one of the fourteen masterpieces signed by the duo now exhibited at New York's MOMA.

Achille-Piergiacomo-Castiglioni

Produced by Flos  since 1962,  has a neoclassical-looking design with a support that looks like a Greek column but was inspired by the old stove pipes for their ability to dissipate heat: as Achille Castiglioni once explained, "We wanted to get a surface that remained cold".

Taccia-Castiglioni

Without any doubt, the concept behind the lamp is modern: in its designers' intentions, it would have to be made in plastic, but the idea was shelved because of the deformations that would have been generated by the heat of the incandescent bulb, the same heat the designers wanted to dispel through the signature "ledges" of the support structure. That's why, for a long time, Taccia has been produced with the now famous swiveling parabolic diffuser in blown glass and the support in anodized extruded aluminum, with a "natural" or black painted finish. But today, thanks to innovations, the Italian brand has restored the original idea of the designers, presenting a version of Taccia in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with a LED light source equipped with a dimmer. In both versions the light source is placed inside the support frame while the "bell" can be freely oriented to direct the light.

Designed as a table lamp, Taccia can also be used as a floor lamp thanks to its considerable size, and is now also produced in a smaller version and in new colors
