Africa Chair

Africa is much more than a chair: it is a design icon that embodies the intrinsic beauty of wood and the harmony between craftsmanship and architecture. A faithful re-edition of the original designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1975, this timeless design returns in 2025 with all its expressive power, celebrating cabinetmaking craftsmanship and the noble material par excellence: solid Canaletto walnut.

With a slender vertical frame and a curved seat upholstered in leather or fabric, Africa stands out for its perfect balance of form and function. But it is the backrest that makes this creation unique: it reveals the intricacies of the handwork in roughing and sanding, from which delicate veining and color nuances emerge, achieved thanks to the dark threading between the layers.

The wide central slit in the back legs is not only a distinctive aesthetic sign, but also a functional element, giving flexibility and comfort to the structure, while evoking a totemic, sculptural presence.

Africa is a tribute to matter and memory, a refined dialogue between past and present, between craft gesture and design vision. An object that tells the story of Italian design and continues to amaze with its poetic essentiality.

Designed by Tobia Scarpa

Tobia Scarpa is one of the most important Italian designers and architects. His figure is often associated with that of his colleague and wife Afra Bianchin, an architect and designer herself. Following in the footsteps of his father Carlo, Tobia Scarpa has made great design masterpieces that have become globally renowned. It suffices to think of the iconic Soriana sofa by Cassina, designed in collaboration with his wife, or of the Foglio wall lamp by Flos and the Pigreco chair by Tacchini.
