Foscarini Big Bang Suspension Lamp - White Designed by Vicente Garcia Jiménez

The energy of an explosion, frozen in an instant: this is the image behind the Big Bang pendant lamp, designed in 2005 by Vicente Garcia Jiménez + Enrico Franzolini for Foscarini. The name declares it without hesitation: planes that seem to flee from a luminous core and spread out in every direction, building a volume around the light source, like shards suspended in the air.

Six translucent methacrylate sheets, each with a different shape, slot into one another thanks to notches cut into the sheets themselves; at the centre, an aluminium plate with white epoxy powder coating completes the light body. Above a table or in the middle of a living room, the Big Bang lamp brings an object of strong plasticity, yet airy, into the room: an architecture of surfaces that changes depending on where it is seen from.

The light falls directly onto the surface below and spreads into the room through the sheets, which draw a pattern of light and shadow all around. The arrangement of the planes is conceived to reflect as much as possible while avoiding glare. Two stainless steel cables and a transparent electrical cable suspend the Big Bang lamp from the ceiling rose, so that all attention stays on the interlocking planes.
