Foscarini Birdie Piccola Table Lamp - LED Designed by Ludovica Serafini + Roberto Palomba

A little bird perching on a thin branch: from this image comes the Birdie Piccola table lamp, which Ludovica Serafini + Roberto Palomba designed for Foscarini in 2011. This is the small size of a family that reinterprets the time-honoured shaded lamp with a light, recognisable stroke, in which the stem evokes the trunk of a tree and the control a branch.

The trunk is a slim steel rod, the base is made by die-casting zamak; both are liquid-painted. Above, the shade layers two injection-moulded polycarbonate shells, the inner one opal and the visible one translucent. On a bedside table or a shelf, the Birdie Piccola lamp takes up little space and brings a small-scale profile into the room, one that reads clearly even with the light off.

Brushing the end of the small arm is enough to change the light: that is where the tactile dimmer sensor is placed, modulating the intensity in steps. Filtered by the double shade, the light emerges diffused and soft over the surface. In its small size, the Birdie Piccola table lamp is also at home on the bedside table, as well as on writing desks and shelves where the available surface is limited and every inch counts.
