Designed by Vico Magistretti for Cassina, the Maralunga collection translates the concept of comfort into upholstered pieces with soft, welcoming shapes. Winner of the Compasso d'Oro award in 1979, the Maralunga sofa stands out with its flexible headrest which can be adjusted to create either a high or low backrest with the help of a bycicle chain that's cleverly concealed within the foam of the backrest. The series also includes a 2 or 3-seater fabric or leather sofa, an armchair and a pouf.
The Cassina Maralunga sofa was born from the visionary collaboration between Vico Magistretti and Cassina. Launched in 1973, the design immediately stood out for its innovative approach to comfort and form. In 1979, the Maralunga couch received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award, solidifying its status as an icon of Italian design and a timeless symbol of functional elegance.
With its hidden adjustable backrest, the Maralunga couch introduced a new way of experiencing relaxation. It broke with convention, offering both upright support and deep lounge comfort within the same silhouette. This versatility, paired with its understated yet inviting presence, made Cassina Maralunga a true revolution in the world of upholstered furniture.
At the heart of the Maralunga couch and Maralunga armchair is the ingenious folding backrest, supported by an internal chain mechanism that allows seamless adjustment. Its enveloping lines and generous padding create a visual and physical sense of softness, inviting rest and redefining the idea of comfort. More than a seat, Maralunga is a design that adapts—elegantly and effortlessly—to life.
