“Search the beauty in the pure form and don't allow it to depend from the ornament.” (1898)
Born in Brno (Czech Republic) in 1870, he studied at the Royal Saxon Polytechnic Institute in Dresden. He did his military service in Vienna, where he met several avant-garde artists. In 1896, after spending three years in the United States, he returned to Vienna, beginning his career as an interior designer and critic. His hallmark is the repulsion for ornament, strongly promoted by the Secessionists, the Viennese branch of Art Nouveau. He died in Kalksburg, Austria, in 1933.
