Austrian architect, designer, and critic Adolf Loos was one of the most influential personalities of the Modern Movement. An advocate for rationality in architecture, his work spanned from architectural works, to furniture design and the writing of essays and articles. Most memorable, the 1899 Café Museum Chair, produced today by Wiener GTV Design. Among the buildings that have made history are Villa Müller, Scheu House, Tristan Tzara House, Karma Villa, Villa Winternitz and Steiner House.
Born in Brno (Czech Republic) in 1870, he studied at the Royal Saxon Polytechnic Institute in Dresden. He did his military service in Vienna, where he met several avant-garde artists. In 1896, after spending three years in the United States, he returned to Vienna, beginning his career as an interior designer and critic. His hallmark is the repulsion for ornament, strongly promoted by the Secessionists, the Viennese branch of Art Nouveau. He died in Kalksburg, Austria, in 1933.
