Afra e Tobia Scarpa

Afra and Tobia Scarpa are two great personalities of Italian design, more than just a romantic couple, a duo connected by art. Both architects and designers, the two spouses brought to life the modern and refined masterpieces that marked the history of the 70s and the 80s. Among these, the Pigreco chair for Gavina, their first project; the iconic 1969 Soriana armchair for Cassina, awarded with the Compasso d’Oro in 1970; the "925" armchair, part of the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York; the Coronado armchairs and sofas B&B Italia.

The two visionary designers have also excellently dealt with the architecture sphere.

Their pieces stand out for their modern, simple and wonderfully revolutionary appeal.
Afra Bianchin was born in 1937 in Montebelluna, and Tobia, Carlo Scarpa’s son, was born in Venice in 1935. They both studied at Venice’s IUAV, where they graduated in architecture. After Tobia Scarpa's collaboration with Venini, the two designers fell in love while attending a course on decoration taught by Franco Albini in 1959. A professional and romantic spark that led to great projects and collaborations, such as those with Cassina, B&B Italia, Molteni&C, Flos, Maxalto and more.
