Elio Martinelli (1921-2004) was a renowned italian lighting designer, globally acclaimed for his projectual innovation and an ambassador of a mid-century modernist Italian aesthetic. After graduating in design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Elio started working for the family company. In 1950, in Lucca, he started his own brand: Martinelli Luce, focused on the production of lighting for both home and contract contexts.
Martinelli’s creations were marked by an impactful, and yet extremely sophisticated geometric expression. He was a pioneer, an innovative artist, and he employed in his products some new materials such as the methacrylate. His lighting creations, from the Cobra to the Foglia lamps, present sinuous curves and vibrant colors; some of them are currently exhibited in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and of many other artistic institutions.
