A Japanese designer with a refined sensibility, Fumie Shibata has cultivated an aesthetic language of soft, precise forms that invite interaction and emphasize usability. Her work—ranging from furniture and lighting to everyday objects—is marked by a strong sense of functionality and meticulous attention to detail. Collaborating with both Japanese and international brands, she brings an authentic character to each project, as seen in the Eri series of small tables and the Enn table designed for Flexform.
After graduating from Musashino Art University, Shibata began her career at a major electrical goods manufacturer before founding Design Studio S, rooted in industrial design. The studio's work spans a wide spectrum—from electronics and medical technology to capsule hotels—seamlessly blending creative vision with practicality. In addition to her practice, she lectures at Musashino Art University, chaired the jury of the Good Design Awards (2018–2019), and has received accolades such as the iF Gold Award and the Design for Asia Award.
