Gastone Rinaldi

Celebrated for his innovative use of curved metal, Gastone Rinaldi masterfully blended the elegance of athletic movement with the technical precision of industrial design. From the iconic DU30 chair—awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1954—to the DU55 armchair, now produced by Poltrona Frau, his work is defined by structural lightness and functionality. In a tribute to his legacy, Tacchini has reissued the Orsola collection of armchairs and sofas—originally designed in the 1970s—distinguished by their soft, sinuous, and rounded forms.

Born in Padua in 1920, Gastone Rinaldi left his economics studies to lead the family business, RIMA, alongside his brother Giorgio. He collaborated with Gio Ponti and designed the DU9 for the 9th Milan Triennale. Following the success of the DU30—winner of the Compasso d’Oro—he worked with Marco Zanuso and Carlo Mollino. In 1974, he founded Thema, his personal creative workshop, where he continued designing through the 1980s. A passionate sportsman with a deep appreciation for technology, Rinaldi redefined modern seating with a style that is dynamic, functional, and timeless.
