George Nakashima

George Nakashima (1905-1990) was one of the best-known designers of the 20th century, especially during the period of the American craft movement. An outstanding woodworking mastery is evident in Nakashima's simple and timeless furniture, benches, tables and coffee tables. Among these, Knoll presents the Straight chair, designed in the 1940s: a beautiful seat that emphasizes the intrinsic qualities of wood, showcasing the artist's keen eye for nature.

Born in America, Nakashima studied architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle, at the Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts Fontainebleau in France, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During World War II, in an internment camp, he learned the art of Japanese woodworking from a local elder. He later moved to Japan, where he worked for American architect Antonin Raymond and then returned to America. He passes away in 1990.
