Josef Hoffmann (1870 -1956) was one of Austria's leading architects and designers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He ranks among the founders of Vienna Secession and of the Wiener Werkstätte, the latter conceived in collaboration with Joseph Maria Olbrich. Hoffmann also designed beautiful furniture such as the N.811 dining chair and armchair for Wiener GTV Design: steam and bent beech wood seats that combine lightness and comfort.
Born in Brtnice, Josef Hoffmann attended the Staatsgewerbeschule in Brno. In 1892 he moved to Vienna to complete his education at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Otto Wagner. As a member of the Vienna Secession, he published numerous illustrations and installations. In 1912 he founded the Österreichischer Werkbund, which was later converted into the Austrian section of the Deutscher Werkbund (1920). He passed away in Vienna in 1956.
