Luigi Caccia Dominioni

Luigi Caccia Dominioni (1913-2016) was among the greatest protagonists of architecture and interior design during the second post-war period. A brilliant interpreter of Milanese tradition, he pursued the search for modernity in any project. His works range from the 1996 restoration of the renowned Piazza San Babila in Milan to the buildings in Piazza Sant’Ambrogio and Piazza Carbonari, from furniture, to lighting and design objects. Luigi Caccia Dominioni was also among the forefathers of Azucena (1947), a brand that boasts great design classics such as the Monachella light bulbs and the Catilina collection of chairs, stools and armchairs.

Many pieces by Luigi Caccia Dominioni express a subtle irony and a floaty style that sometimes approaches surrealism.

“Like so many of his contemporaries, Caccia experimented with the scale of objects, enlarging and shrinking them and playing with their proportions.”
Graduated in 1936 from the Polytechnic of Milan, Luigi Caccia Dominioni begins his career by starting a studio with the two Castiglioni brothers, Livio and Piergiacomo, with whom he dealt with interior architecture, design, and industrial design. The artist believed that “apartments are micro cities” and the people inside move essentially “mostly twisting and turning like water flowing down a river”. Curves are, not by chance, the protagonists of his most illustrious works, such as the Catilina chair, the Fascia Specchiata table, the Toro line, the Cavalletto table.
