Masanori Umeda

Masanori Umeda is an important designer of the Japanese artistic scenario. Among his most important projects are the Tawaraya bed for Memphis, the lamp designs for Yamagiwa and workspace toilets. His creations are defined as postmodern, poetic and ironic and his style represents a perfect synthesis between West and East. Of note is his Rose Chair by Edra, a voluptuous masterpiece with soft petals, all handmade and luxuriously upholstered in velvet.

Masanori Umeda was born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1941. Soon the artist moved to Milan, the city where he began working in the studio of the Castiglioni brothers. Umeda is known to the general public for joining the Memphis radical group. During the 1980s the designer returned to Japan and founded his own studio in Tokyo: Umeda Design Studio Inc. The designer has participated in several international exhibitions and has won numerous prestigious awards.
