Peter Opsvik revolutionized the concept of seating, turning ergonomic design into a fluid, natural gesture. With Varier, he developed iconic chairs like the Variable, designed to encourage movement and break away from postural rigidity. His creations challenge traditional norms, drawing inspiration from the human body’s innate ability to adapt. For Opsvik, comfort was never static—it meant freedom, variation, and conscious movement.
Born in Norway in 1939, Peter Opsvik devoted his life to reimagining how we sit. His vision, bridging functional research and a deeply humanistic approach, has left a lasting mark on contemporary industrial design. A pioneer of ergonomics and a creator of unconventional solutions, he was honored with the Compasso d’Oro Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. Opsvik passed away in 2024, but his legacy lives on through Varier, which continues to carry forward his ideas with integrity and dedication.
