Poul Kjaerholm

Poul Kjærholm brought a structural and restrained vision to Danish design, distilling each piece to its purest form. His iconic PK22 and PK24 chairs—produced by Fritz Hansen—embody this philosophy: light, precise, and crafted from steel, leather, and woven cane. Stripping away the superfluous, Kjærholm allowed materials and proportions to speak with quiet authority. Each creation reveals a calm, essential beauty—poised between craftsmanship and architecture.

Born in Østervrå in 1929, Kjærholm began his career as a cabinetmaker before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He later taught and directed the Institute of Design in the Danish capital, becoming a pivotal figure in Nordic design. A firm believer in the value of industrial production, he worked first with E. Kold Christensen and later with Fritz Hansen. Today, his award-winning works, held in major museum collections, continue to reflect a radical, timeless approach to design.
