Renzo Frau
The history of Poltrona Frau can be traced back to one figure, Lorenzo Frau, aka Renzo. A man from the military world who, passionate about design, started one of the largest Made in Italy companies. During a business trip to England he discovered the Chesterfield sofa and, sensing its potential, was the first to bring it to Italy. Driven by a passion for French and Central European design, he decided to open his own workshop. In 1912 Poltrona Frau was born.
Renzo Frau was born in Cagliari in 1881 and left his hometown to do his military service in Milan. There, he met Savina Pisati, his future wife and business partner. They moved to Turin, where Renzo worked for several companies, such as Gribaudi and Dermoide Patent. During the First World War and after the creation of Poltrona Frau, he was called to arms and left the company to his wife, who would manage it in the years to come and after his premature passing in 1926.
