A famous architect and interior designer, Umberto Riva was born on June 16, 1928. In 2018 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement by the Milan Triennale. The artist was a student of Carlo Scarpa at the University of Venice, and first approached the world of architecture in 1960 in Milan. He was defined by the public as the master of light, for having created some of the most beautiful design masterpieces for brands such as Fontana Arte, Francesconi, VeArt, Poltronova, Driade.
Some of his projects include Piazza San Nazaro in Milan, or the Piazza della Farnesina in Rome, as well as the restoration of Caffè Pedrocchi in Padua, the European Library of Porta Vittoria in Milan, and the thermoelectric power plants in Catanzaro and Campobasso. During the 90s the artist participated in major international exhibitions, such as Creativitalia in Tokyo and the Venice Biennale in 1991. Dates back to 1985 the famous "Casa Frea", exhibited at the Paris Biennale.
