Eclisse, the table lamp designed by Vico Magistretti for Artemide in 1965 and winner of the Compasso d'Oro in 1967, has become a classic of Italian design. This rounded and simple table lamp, which can also be wall mounted, was inspired by the lanterns of miners or thieves, as Magistretti himself points out. An idea he had in 1963 in the subway, while thinking of Jean Valjean's lantern, the protagonist of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. The designer drew a sketch on the back of the subway ticket, in order not to forget the project. This event gave rise to the Eclisse lamp by Vico Magistretti, consisting of 3 "hemispheres": two fixed ones - the base and the outer shell - and a moveable one, the inner shell. Manual adjustment makes it is possible to control the light beam, with visual effects that recall the natural lunar eclipse, while providing a direct or diffuse light emission. The design of the Eclisse table lamp is quite versatile: it is perfect for both the office, the living area or the bedroom. This wonderful international lighting icon is exhibited in the most important design museums, including the MoMa in New York and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.
