The Japan armchair, designed by Finn Juhl in 1957 and today produced by House of Finn Juhl, embodies the essence of traditional Japanese architecture. The horizontal backrest, supported by slightly tapered legs, recalls the proportions of temple gates, while the circular detail at the ends introduces a sense of balance to the composition.
In this design, Juhl applies the principle of distinction between supporting and supported elements: the backrest, deliberately detached from the base, conveys visual lightness while ensuring stability. The linear structure reflects a measured approach, yet it reveals character through subtle variations, in keeping with the designer’s idea that “the deviation lies in the detail.”
The Japan armchair is part of a series that also includes a sofa, a pouf, and a three-seater version, developed during Juhl’s collaboration with the Danish manufacturer France & Son to create an industrially feasible design without sacrificing aesthetics. Made of oak and available with Watercolour fabric upholstery, the Japan armchair is suited to both domestic interiors and representative spaces.

Finn Juhl (1912- 1989) architect and interior and industrial designer, is considered one of the fathers of Danish design. In 1931 he studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He opened his studio in Copenhagen in 1945 where he began to design his first pieces of furniture using precious materials such as wood and leather. Finn Juhl, far from the Danish purist design of the time, was inspired by a modern and functional design and his passion for distant cultures, such as the African or Egyptian one. Accompanying his projects was the cabinetmaker Niels Vodder who translated Juhl's drawings into products with complex and sophisticated shapes. Among the most famous realizations we remember the Grasshopper seat, the Pelican armchair and the iconic Chieftain Chair.
The House of Finn Juhl furniture takes us into the world of Danish design of the 40s and 50s, surprising us with its impeccable shapes, details and aesthetics. The brand aims to bring back to life and faithfully reproduce the great classics of the designer and pioneer Finn Juhl. From the Poet sofa to the Chieftan and 53 Chairs, House of Finn Juhl furniture is a voice of uncompromising quality, expressed by the selection of materials, refined upholstery and excellent woodwork.
