The Frieze London Week, one of the most influential contemporary art fairs, dedicates the edition of this year to the celebration of pop-art. For the occasion, a new version of Gufram’s iconic Cactus coat hanger appears among the best work of the greatest exponent of the genre, like Andy Warhol a Roy Lichtenstein and Tom Wesselmann. The topic and the organization of the fair, whose title is Marilyn, Flowers, Lips, Gun, Mirror, Cactus, come from the collaboration between the Piedmontese company and the Ordovas private gallery, staging numerous museum-level exhibitions each year.

Since its foundation Gufram is considered a prosecutor of the 60’s avant-gardist tendencies, which subverted the traditional idea of furnishing by introducing strong colors and irreverent subjects in the field. Memorable creations like the Bocca sofa or the Pratone seat, defined by critics “subversive, fun and desecrating domestic sculptures”, continue to honor that spirit from the worldwide houses and museums.

Among these, the most iconic is in fact the Cactus coat hanger, proposed over the years in innumerable and variegated editions. Cactus is a symbol of strength and irony, slipping away from any functionalism. It can fulfill its function or be used as an ornamental element, but in any case it gathers the attention of the observers with its strong personality. Cactus is realized in flexible polyurethane and, in this last version, covered in Guflac, a particular varnish making the surface phosphorescent.
