«Il y a des objets qui naissent du désir et de l’amour.Il y a des objets qui disparaissent, soufflés par l’air du temps.Être dans l’air du temps, c’est avoir le destin des feuilles mortes. (Jean Guitton)Seuls le beau et le juste sont éternels.»Philippe Cazer et Frédéric Winkler

DCW Éditions reinvents lamps with elegance. Thanks to this French design brand, we can now appreciate the timeless style of Lampe Gras, the first articulated lamp in history, as well as the contemporary lines of the In The Tube collection.

Iconic, essential, as thin and nervous as the body of a praying mantis, the insect that gives it its name: Mantis is a collection of timeless lamps. Designed in 1951 by the German-born sculptor Bernard Schottlander, it was recently revived by DCW Editions, allowing new generations to appreciate its ingenious design.

Bernard-Schottlander

Made up of pendant, wall, table and floor lamps in steel and aluminum, the Mantis collection was inspired by the Bauhaus’ signature principles of formal purity and functional evidence but also by Alexander Calder’s innovative kinetic art sculptures, the so-called mobiles. It is not by chance that the 27-year-old Schottlander dedicated his creations to the American artist, famous for his biomorphic sculptures at the interplay of balance and imbalance.

For Mantis, Schottlander developed a counter-weighted system and gave the aluminum shade an helical profile . The shape is organic, as if it was drawn in a single stroke, and the metal stem is flexible and durable.

With Mantis, Schottlander’s aim was to celebrate the modern aesthetic, but the lamps were built mainly by hand, not industrially, in a limited number of pieces and up to 1955. The large-scale production of DCW Edition brings to fulfillment Schottlander ‘s original plan.

Even the new edition of the hanging lamp Here Comes the Sun was a success for the company lead by Philippe Cazer and Frederic Winkler. Designed by French architect Bertrand Balas in 1969, it was inspired by the famous Beatles song, a celebration of the regenerating power of the sun after a long winter.

Although futuristic, even the design of In The Tube collection by Dominique Perrault and Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost retains a timeless aura. Available in a series of highly contemporary finishes such as gold, copper and silver, each with its repercussions on the colour of the light given off, In The Tube simply seduces:
