Tom Dixon introduces The Coal Office: the new headquarter in London
“I did not want this to be a showroom with a restaurant, but a real design hub”: this is how Tom Dixon explains the concept behind his new headquarter, located in an ex coal warehouse.
The 18.000 square feet building is in Kings Cross, northern London, which is going through a deep regeneration, prepearing itself to became one of the most visited shopping area, with an estimate 13 million people transit every year. And it’s not without reason that also Google placed its headquarter here.
Beside the Tom Dixon offices, the building hosts some partners as well, that decided to rent some spaces there: at the moment you can find Made a mano (tiles), The rug company (carpet) and Sphere (resin flooring). The ground floor hosts the big showroom where you can browse in all that the Tom Dixon world offers: from lamps to candles, from upholstery to soaps and furnitures.
Next to the shop there is the factory: a real workshop where every two months a different manufacture will be host “to go back to what I really like: to produce things” Tom Dixon says. Between the offices and the showroom, the restaurant is going to open in June or July and a selected chef will prepare middle eastern menu.
The Coal Office preview gave Tom Dixon the chance to introduce some news form the brand, renowed for copper accessories. Silver, black and blue form the new color palette and the brand also launched a full spectrum of fabric and five legs options for its upholstery collection: natural and black oak alongside copper, brass and silver.
And if there has been a big talk about Tom Dixon absence at this year Milan Design Week, he answers: “This year I choose to invest at home. Next year? I will probably be in Milan, also because it will be the Euroluce year and we feel we have to be there in some way, but we still don’t know how”.
