Vitra managed to make the iconic Panton chair even more original and surprising, launching two limited editions: Panton Chrome and Panton Glow. In 1967, the first all-plastic cantilever chair with a sculptural shape appeared in the world of design. It was a unique piece of furniture realized using a revolutionary technique and presented at IMM Cologne 1968. Symbol of an era, nowadays the Panton chair continues to fascinate everyone thanks to its exclusive design born from the fancy of Verner Panton. The Panton Chrome version is the result of a project cultivated for a long time by the famous designer: he wanted to cover the curves of the cantilever chair with a reflecting surface. Despite the interest of Verner Panton in mirrored surfaces and experiments with reflective effects, he did not succeed because of the sensitivity of this surface to scratching. Only thanks to an advanced metallisation process the dazzling mirrored effect was created: metal particles are embedded in multiple layers of varnish.

Also, the Panton Glow chair with its blue and mysterious glare, was made through a complex process of coating, by adding phosphorescent pigments to the raw shell of the Panton Classic. Vitra has designed the Panton Glow chair in collaboration with Marianne, Verner’s wife, to realize futuristic, colorful and lighting furniture according to the dream of her husband.

The two special editions Panton Chrome and Panton Glow convey the creativity of a designer who played with shapes, light, colors and materials to give birth to aesthetic and functional solutions.
