Potence is a wall lamp created by designer Jean Prouvé and produced by the Vitra brand. Available in different finishes.
In the 1940s, Jean Prouvé designed the Potence wall lamp for his home in Nancy. An inner desire to recreate a timeless lamp, from which it will be very difficult to separate oneself, led Prouvé, through a simple work, to create a lamp with a unique and elegant design; whose main source of illumination is downwards, with a warm and welcoming tone. The materials are very well finished and refined, with the frame made of powder-coated tubular metal giving it a highly expressive overall appearance and the shade made of white brushed cotton fabric with plastic reinforcement. It can be combined with a furnishing style ranging from classic to modern. It lends itself well above a sideboard in a living room, on a bedside table or on a desk in a professional studio, always remaining the centre of attention.

Jean Prouvé was born in 1901 in Nancy and completed his training as a metal artisan in Paris. He went on to open his workshop in his native town in the early 1920s. He was one of the firsts who devoted themselves to metal prefabbrication, which made him a reference point for rationalist architects and designers, such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Marcel Lodsed, Eugène Beaudoin, Yona Friedman e Georges Candilis. Although being self-taught in the field of engineering and architecture, he gave a decisive contribution to post-war reconstruction in France and designed a wide range of objects, from modular building systems to chairs, imposing a style which combines beauty and materials functionality.
