KALD GmbH SurfBench Designed by Kim André Lange

The SurfBench, designed by Kim André Lange and produced by the brand Kald GmbH, redefines the very concept of collective seating, introducing direct and physical interaction with space. Its mechanism is based on a simple principle: the user’s kinetic energy transforms into a wave-like motion that moves through the entire structure. No motor, no electricity. Just matter, weight, and balance.

The oscillation is fluid, responsive, adaptive. It shifts as people move, halts with presence, reacts to interaction. Sitting is no longer a passive act, but a trigger for collective motion. Each person affects the bench’s behavior, generating a shared dynamic. Initially conceived as a graduation project, the interactive bench transforms waiting moments and public areas into dynamic, sensory experiences, encouraging interaction. The symmetrical wooden elements allow use from both sides while preserving a compact, functional form. Its motion recalls that of a surfboard gliding across water, tracing soft and continuous curves—a movement that engages the body and the environment, almost hypnotic in its rhythm.

Entirely made in Italy with local materials, SurfBench is designed to endure. Each component is replaceable, extending the bench’s life and limiting its environmental impact. Suitable for public, professional, or residential spaces, it brings a quiet yet transformative presence: an analog bench that turns sitting into an active, participatory gesture.
