Zig-Zag Chair

Designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld for Cassina in 1934, Zig-Zag has the shape of an inverted Z and is in ashwood stained blue, red, yellow, white, black with edge in natural ashwood.

Using diagonals, Rietveld was the first to introduce this new unusual shape in the chair design scene. Zig-Zag has four panels that bend in sequence from top to bottom in an elegant dance and create what may seem an unstable chair that is in reality firmly grounded.

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) was a Dutch designer, architect and craftsman. Considered one of the great masters of the last century, he established himself among the main exponents of the neoplastic artistic movement. Two personalities emerge from his works, that of the craftsman cabinetmaker who reinvents chairs and furniture according to his code and that of the architect with elegant formulas. Great works such as the Red and Blue, the Utrecht armchair and sofa made for Cassina, are the expression of a design that has eternal life.
