Vitra Akari Collection
The elegantly intriguing Akari Light sculptures, designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951, were inspired by traditional paper lanterns used by Japanese fishermen during night fishing. The choice of the name ‘Akari’ was significant, in Japanese, the word means ‘light’, regarding both illumination and physical lightness. Over 100 variations of the delicate bamboo and washi paper lamps are handcrafted in the Japanese city of Gifu, encompassing table, floor and pendant options in a broad range of forms and sizes.
