“I designed the architectural [elements] that were needed to make the room work, things like the walls, [tables] and sofas.” - Florence Knoll
Born in 1917 in Saginaw, Michigan, Florence attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art, an artistic community run by Eliel Saarinen. The designer maintained a close relationship with Eliel’s son, Eero, and came into contact with great architecture masters such as Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1946 she married Hans Knoll, and together they turned their newborn company into an international pillar of style and design. With the creation of the Planning Unit and of the KnollTextiles collection, she has revolutionized the post-war way of conceiving offices, such as the ones designed for IBM, GM and CBS. After the death of Hans, Florence took over the company and became president until 1960. She retired in 1965 and passed away in Coral Gables in 2019.
