Flos, Milan 2019. An extraordinary history of design

A stand with a new exhibition format that includes experiments on new forms of light, ranging between Home, Outdoor and Architectural products for the contract space. Designers with a strong design identity characterize each area of the stand, that with their own proposals fill up the space with evocative images, moving only with light.

To welcome us at the beginning of the itinerary is Michael Anastassiades with his two new creations: Coordinates, a series of vertical and horizontal linear elements that intersect, creating a grid with a strong visual impact. Perfect for both contract and private use, the design solutions are endless. My Circuit is the next proposal, code word: Freedom. In fact, to compose this installation it is sufficient to combine the different elements in "freedom" and create the desired geometry. It is composed of a track to be mounted on the ceiling and five different pendants can be attached and repositioned along the track.

To emphasizes Flos 's history, two great returns: Chiara di Mario Bellini comes to be the protagonist on the occasion of 50 years and is produced in a special re-edition. A single sheet of aluminum cut and rolled into a cylinder and the light is diffused by a huge “hat”. Design deconstructivism, in which the shape is forged through observation of what already exists and we know. Starting from this concept the Castiglioni brothers create the Bulbo lamp, Flos celebrates it with a rich and touching installation.

Patricia Urquiola is the next designer after Flos’s icons with her Flauta, a slender and linear wall lamp that captures and reverberates the light emitted thanks to the circular reflector. Available in different colors and sizes to create customized options.

Wireline by Formafantasma is majestic and minimal at the same time, a rubber belt that supports a linear glass led element. A lamp that plays on the material contrast of rubber and the sophistication of the extrusion glass that contains the light source. Needless to say, the possible geometries to be obtained by combining different pieces are innumerable and always original.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec propose a contemporary and scenographic contract solution, Belt is its name, leather bands in which luminous profiles are found. A design proposal in which light is the protagonist and an integral part of the furniture. Other Architectural innovations are the Zero Track and the Diversion by Piero Lissoni.

As far as outdoor is concerned, Flos offers many new features. Let's start with Nendo, which surprises us with a lamp that looks almost like a work of art leaning against the wall, its name is Heco. A metal profile that contains a luminous sphere, nothing else. Haeru, on the other hand, is a coffee table with integrated light, essential in shape and appearance. The proposals for the outdoor continue with two floor lamps: Captain Flint and the new outdoor version of IC by Anastassiades.

What’s more, we could not miss one of the major exponents of the Flos brand: Philippe Starck with his new In Vitro. A lamp collection for the outdoor: suspension, floor, ceiling, wall, and portable with an elegant rubber grip. Conclude the outdoor novelty series with Caule by P. Urquiola, Wallstick and Tile by A. Citterio.

In conclusion, a small quote should also be made for Noctambule by Konstantin Grcic and La Plus Belle Est by Philippe Starck that will finally be produced about two years after their presentation. They find exhibition space in the new and refurbished Flos flagship store in Milan signed by the Calvi Brambilla studio.
