The new collection by Henzel Studio is a hommage to Andy Warhol
Limited editions, acid colors, abstract shapes in which we can sometimes recognize Marilyn Monroe's iconic lips, and new interpretations of her famous Warhol's portrait by Calle Henzel. Henzel Studio Heritage: Andy Warhol, the new collection of handmade rugs and pillows is a triumph of Pop Art on silk and cotton.
Developed in collaboration with the philanthropic organization Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the collection is based on a maquette Warhol created for an unrealized artists book, discovered in 1994.
Thirty-eight octagonal pages, each of which is a die-cut detail of Marilyn's face, taken from Warhol’s print edition set of Marilyn Monroe dated 1967, that includes 10 variations of the actress iconic portrait. Each page has become a handmade rug in hand-knotted silk, in which ancient Oriental producion techniques meet the quintessence of American culture: Andy Warhol: Marilyn Monroe Maquette Book.
To expand on the maquette, this limited edition of 38 numbered rugs is joined by another limited edition, Andy Warhol: Marilyn Monroe, always signed by Calle Henzel and characterised by his signature design features, such as freeform organic shapes and uneven fringes. The 60s meet punk-style anarchy and creative freedom.
And then there's Marilyn Monroe I Love Your Kiss Forever Forever, 1969, a two-piece rug depicting Monroe’s lips taken from a lithograph printed by Warhol in 1964 as part of the publication 1 ¢ Life.
Rounding out the new collection, eight pillows, in a limited edition of 500 pieces each, representing, as the first set of rugs, a tribute to the unreleased maquette, Calle Henzel’s hommage to the unexplored facets of the preeminent American artist of the 20th Century.
