Carlton Freestanding Bookcase

Carlton is a freestanding bookcase produced by the creative flair of Ettore Sottsass in 1981 for Memphis Milano. Made of wood and plastic laminate.

Carlton is an iconic bookcase of radical design and a symbol of Memphis production worldwide. The forms of Carlton have a vaguely anthropomorphic character, as they symbolize the image of a man with raised arms and spread legs. Today, this bookcase has taken on a highly decorative function thanks to its design. In fact, the colors are the real highlight of this creation: bright and incredibly well matched. Memphis Milano, founded by Sottsass, Radice, and De Lucchi, shook the design world of the 1980s and caused discussion about its unconventionality. Its founders defined it as a platform for critical reflection and design, with the aim of questioning the aesthetics, materials, and production methods of industrial design of its time. Memphis today is a symbol of formal inclusiveness, a combination of signs, shapes, and colors in an unusual pop combination, translated into the use of materials that are not at all precious such as plastic laminate and Venetian terrazzo.

The Carlton bookcase is sold with a certificate of authenticity and guarantees a stamp.

Ettore Sottsass Jr was born in Innsbruck in 1917 by a homonymous father and an Austrian mother. In 1939 he graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Torino. Architect, designer and photographer, Sottsass were among the most influential figures of radical design. In 1981 he founded the Memphis group, an Italian design and architecture collective distinguished by the use of bright colours and eccentric geometrical figures.

Produced by Memphis

Memphis is design, history, revolution. The company owns Memphis-Milano, Meta-Memphis and Post Design, three brands that belong to three different moments in Memphis' history. Founded in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass and a group of designers and architects, Memphis revolutionized the concept of living through furniture, lamps and accessories that mix elegance and kitsch, in dialogue with absurd and irrational shapes. Memphis' catalogue is constantly growing, ranging from historical collection to new trends and arrivals.
