Simple and geometric: so was the Modernist art, so is Utrecht, designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. Craftsman, architect and designer, in 1919 Rietveld joined De Stijl movement, that theorized neoplasticism and set an original syntax of forms, materials and space. In 1935 Rietveld designed the Utrecht; the name is a hommage to his hometown, while the concept behind the armchair was to join a comfortable design with the need for easy chairs of the customers and principals of Metz & Co. Its essential line derives from the combination of four volumes: the back and seat, slightly inclined, and arms and legs, that form an ‘L’.

In 1988, one hundred years after Rietveld’s birth, Cassina started producing the chair again. As with all icons, its design perfectly stands the test of time and the visible stitching makes it even more contemporary. Available in three sizes and in a variety of finishes, upholstered in fabric or leather, Utrecht is now enhanced by a brand new colourful textile by Bertjan Pot, BoxBlocks. As a matter of fact, the armchair is part of the MutAzioni project along with 8 other icons produced by the brand and now reinterpreted on the occasion of its 90th anniversary.

Pot has designed a Jacquard fabric in three versions made up of eight coloured threads that are mixed two at a time to create 19 different colours and a unique geometric pattern in which every combination of triangles is never repeated. Each of the three versions of Pot's BoxBlocks fabric will cover 90 limited-edition chairs
