Combining industrial production and respect for the environment is no longer a challenge but a concrete and structural reality for many important companies who have long since started a research path that can make processes and products sustainable. What does sustainable mean? It means that the impact on the environment of its production and life cycle is low, or zero, and this can only be achieved through a design of which sustainability is an essential feature. This opens the production experience to many different interpretations, and here each company decides to follow this path in its own way, experimenting with innovative solutions that could represent the standard tomorrow. Let's see some of them together, in which beauty and responsibility marry perfectly.

Kartell : scientific research and innovation in materials

P/Wood by Kartell

It remains faithful to its aesthetics linked to Kartell plastics, which is expressed in the project / manifesto presented last year at the Salone del Mobile in Milan "Kartell loves the planet". The initiative stems from the collaboration with the Bio On company, specialized in the production of bioplastics or plastics obtained from the processing of components of plant origin from renewable sources. Among the first Kartell furnishings to be produced in bioplastic, there are the famous  modular ones (on the cover), designed by  Anna Castelli Ferrieri in 1967 and become an icon of Kartell production and Italian design. In addition to this project, Kartell is also pursuing other paths towards sustainability: recyclable materials, also for packaging, the  Wood line in certified wood from renewable sources and used with a technology capable of minimizing material consumption and the experimentation of Riciclato, a 100% recycled thermoplastic technopolymer deriving from pure storage material not contaminated by other materials.

Zanotta : from fishing nets to fabric for the version  #SaccoGoesGreen

#SaccoGoesGreen by Zanotta

Another famous icon of the 70s turns into a sign of sustainability: it is the Sacco armchair, designed in 1968 by the architects Gatti, Paolini and Teodoro. In the "green" version the padding is based on Synbra's BioFoam® microspheres, a sugar cane-based bioplastic, a plant, which unlike fossils can be potentially regenerated for ever, and the effect is all similar to that of traditional polystyrene. The upholstery fabric, on the other hand, is made of ECONYL®, a nylon yarn obtained from the recovery of fishing nets collected on the seabed, scraps of industrial fabric and plastic, with a consistency and properties similar to those of nylon.

Moooi  : the extension of the  Random II life cycle

Random II by Moooi

The concept of "disposable" is intended for sunset in an era where everything is done to reduce waste and waste production. On the contrary, we try to extend the life cycle of the products, we try to make them eternal or almost. And this is the case of Random II, the re-edition of the Random lamp designed by Bertjan Pot for Moooi in 2002: in the new version, a light bulb Custom designed LED by Moooi, extends its life cycle.

CC-Tapis : the circular use of raw materials in the  Fordite carpet

Fordite by CC-Tapis

Talking about sustainability,  Patricia Urquiola has developed for CC-tapis a carpet that encompasses all the culture of the designer's project and her ability to identify concrete and at the same time rich in poetry solutions. Fordite is a resultant material of the automotive industry paints that accumulate to form blocks of variegated color. Urquiola has transferred this process to the production of rugs, using, instead of varnish, Himalayan wool, pure silk and aloe, resulting from the processing of CC Tapis. The processing of these waste materials produces a layered color result similar to that of fordite, in a carpet with a unique and responsible style.
